Abolition of school fees
In a letter to the congregation, August 29th1891, Fr Fieu says: “The Education Department has lately forwarded a circular to ascertain whether the Managers of St Peter’s Schools will accept or refuse the Government Fee Grant. Although this fresh measure is presented with a graceful appearance, it may be considered as another chain to tie down all Voluntary Schools. The offer has been reluctantly accepted. In future, then, no Fees will be received in the above Schools.”
