Anti-catholic riots

January

Anti-Catholic storms in Woolwich were allegedly fomented mainly by “a notorious bigot, Dr Potter, and his paid hireling, Murphy”. The Catholics, especially Fr Cotter, defended their faith strongly. His letter to the “Woolwich Gazette”, referring to an anti-Catholic meeting held in the Coffee Tavern, New Road  resulting in what was called “Religious Riots” and “Anti-Convent Row” concludes, after protesting against the methods used : “It is reported that Dr Potter’s abortive efforts will be renewed. If he does, we shall then be reminded of a hero in Hudibras – “Again comes out this lying lout, brimfull of wrath and cabbage.”
