Fr Coles designated Rector
In 1850 the pope had established dioceses covering England and Wales, each with their own bishop. The new Bishop of Southwark was Dr Grant. He appointed rectors (broadly equivalent to present-day parish priests) to lead the local Catholic missions throughout the diocese. Fr. Cornelius Coles was established as the first Apostolic Rector of Woolwich.
